The publishing company Bauer Verlag founded the magazine Horizonte with the intention to create a cultural, science, global magazine as a rival to top dogs in that area namely National Geographic and Geo. The first (and last) titles where sold out and broadcasted stories from famous writers Umberto Eco and Salmon Rushdie among others. Matthias created the concept for the cover story, titled “Timbuktu: die heimlichen Wüstenbibliotheken”, a story about the legendary manuscripts and ancient libraries in Timbuktu. He wrote the story and produced it together with famous photographer Sibylle Bergemann. The story served as basis for numerous documentary movies and discussions about the spiritual heritage of Mali.
